“The most important measure of how good a game I played was how much better I’d made my teammates play” – Bill Russell (American Basketball Player, Boston Celtics) The Scoil Aonghusa team who are coached by former Irish team basketball player Rose McCarthy had a fun day playing in the ‘Cis Pheil na mBun Scoil’ non competitive blitz in Cork city recently. The tournament takes place each year and allows primary school children from schools of all sizes to compete in a healthy activity where participation is one of the main aims. The team played four games over the morning and although no formal scores were kept in the non competitive matches, the Scoil Aonghusa pupils did their school proud. Playing basketball is a great sport for helping develop a child’s co-ordination, team building and social skills. Team sports help children to integrate physical activity into their lives and helps their overall physical fitness. Each child received a certificate for participating and as an added reward, Scoil Aonghusa considered the activity for their monthly award ceremony at school assembly. Basketball is one of the sports games taught to all pupils as part of the P.E. Curiculum in the school. Further training is provided after school every Thursday for those pupils who wish to develop their skills further. Pupils from first class up will receive chess and draughts classes once a week with our School Chess Master, Gordon Mewis. Last year our in-school chess tournament was won by Liam O’Riordan and we had three pupils on the ChessForAll Roll of Honour. Well done to all. Pupils attend chess classes in the local chess Club- The Knight’s of St. James- as well. This has improved their skills. The classes are on every Monday night in St. James’s Hall at 7:00pm.
