Health Promotion at Scoil Aonghusa C.N.S.

‘Guess the smoothie, is it banana, strawberry, pineapple…..?’ This is what the pupils of Scoil Aonghusa C.N.S were doing first thing on Monday morning as part of a health promotion activity week being run by resource teacher Nora O’Sullivan. Scoil Aonghusa CNS is a healthy eating school with a healthy lunch policy in place all year round, students are encouraged to bring healthy lunches to school each day and are allowed one small treat on a Friday. The Bord Bia Food Dudes programme is being run at the school, it encourages children to eat more fruit and vegetables using positive role models, repeated food tastings and rewards. Eating healthy food gives the children the nutrients and energy needed to learn effectively throughout the school day. Before the mid-term break we took this concept further and developing the pupils positive attitude towards food and health, and also to school, home and community life. The pupils were learning and practicing their personal, social and health promoting skills which will help improve their learning outcomes. Each day there was healthy eating, fitness and positive attitude activities including a ‘Dance and be happy class’ at the end of the day. If you or your child want to give a happy positive attitude song a try check out the ‘Just Dance Kids, Gummy Bear song’ on YouTube. The week finished with an assembly celebrating everyone’s effort in creating a health promotion atmosphere in our school, which is as much about having a positive mindset as it is about eating healthily.
