“And above all watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it”
Roald Dahl, one of the greatest children’s authors of all time, is still creating magic in the lives of children. During September every year children all over the world celebrate Roald Dahl Month in memory of the man whose books instilled a love of reading in the lives of so many. On Thursday the 24th of September, Scoil Aonghusa Community National school classrooms were packed full with witches, Willy Wonkas, Matildas, Charlie Buckets, Farmers Bunce, Boggis and Bean and many wonderful rich characters from Roald Dahl classics. All children, from Junior Infants to 6th class, arrived at school dressed as characters from their favourite book, to take part in a fancy dress competition and quiz on Roald Dahl and of course, win prizes of chocolate and sweets of all types from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
Roald Dahl once said “ Please, oh please, we beg, we pray, throw your tv set away and in its place you can install, a lovely bookcase on the wall”. 1st, 2nd and 3rd class teacher Noreen O’Regan emphasised the importance of reading in a child’s education and life, She said of the day “The children in my class love reading Roald Dahl books, they bring magic into my classroom, allowing them to immerse themselves in a world that draws their imagination and inevitably allows their love of reading to blossom. Roald Dahl day at our school encourages the children to read and allows them to express their love of literature in a fun way”.
